The photo to be used on the 6×9 book cover will have a non-solid background color, which will be consistent across the front cover, back cover, and spine. Once the photo is edited, the front cover will feature Photo, no text. Similarly, the spine will also be text-free. The back cover will include text: the book title, author’s name, blurb, and a space for the ISBN barcode. For hardcover books, a 2″ by 1.2″ white box for the barcode will be positioned in the lower right-hand corner of the back cover, and for paperback books, it will be in the lower left-hand corner. KDP will automatically add a ISBN. Ensure this area is free of images or text to avoid them beingobscured by the barcode during printing.

Yes, you can use the scanned photo for your 6×9 KDP front book cover, but there are a few steps you’ll need to take to ensure it meets the quality standards required for printing and to address the issues like scratches and the image dimensions:

1. Image Editing and Restoration (The problem with the pixels will have to be addressed.)

  • Fix Scratches: Use photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP to remove scratches and imperfections. Tools like the Healing Brush, Clone Stamp, or Spot Healing Brush are effective for this task.
  • Enhance Quality: Adjust brightness, contrast, and sharpness to enhance the overall quality of the image. If the photo looks faded or discolored, you can also correct the color balance.

2. Resizing and Resampling

  • Check Resolution: For printing, the image needs to be at least 300 DPI (dots per inch). Your current dimensions (773×957 pixels) at 300 DPI will not cover a 6×9 inch cover completely, as it would require at least 1800×2700 pixels.
  • Resize: You will need to resize the image. This can be done through resampling in a photo editor. Increase the number of pixels while setting the resolution to 300 DPI, ensuring the final image size is around 1800×2700 pixels or more. Be aware that resizing can affect image quality, potentially making it blurry or pixelated.
  • Maintain Aspect Ratio: Ensure that the resizing keeps the aspect ratio consistent to avoid distortion.

3. Conversion to Suitable Format

  • Change File Format: KDP prefers JPEG or TIFF files for images. Convert your BMP file to one of these formats after editing. These formats are supported by KDP and are typical for high-quality printing.

4. Final Touches and Layout

  • Design Layout: Since you want no text on the front cover and the spine, and only text on the back cover, lay out your cover design accordingly. Tools like Adobe InDesign or even KDP’s own Cover Creator can help you design the cover layout, ensuring proper placement of the barcode and text on the back cover.
  • Preview and Adjust: Before finalizing the cover, use KDP’s preview tool to see how your cover looks in the actual format. This step is crucial to spot any last-minute adjustments in alignment or layout.

5. Professional Help

  • Consider Professional Help: If the above steps seem daunting or the photo restoration doesn’t turn out as expected, consider hiring a professional graphic designer or a photo restoration expert who can ensure your cover meets professional standards.

Following these steps will help you prepare your scanned photo for use on a 6×9 KDP book cover, ensuring it looks both professional and appealing.
